Hydrogen production by ethanol steam reforming over Co-Hydrotalcites having basic sites

Resumen

Co/Hydrotalcite catalysts were prepared, characterized and evaluated in the steam reforming of ethanol from 500 to 650°C. The addition of Co to the hydrotalcite decreased the surface area, increased the pore volume, produced a bimodal pore distribution and mesopores. Additionally Co promoted thermal stability to the hydrotalcite and produced additional basic sites. It was found that Co concentration was enriched on the hydrotalcite surface. The reaction products were: H2,CO2CH3CHO, CO, CH4 and CH3COCH3. A promoting effect of Co was observed in the conversion of ethanol to H2 from 2.5 to 10wt%Co. For the hydrotalcites with Co, the selectivity to H2 was between 63 to 71% among 500 to 650°C. The hydrotalcite without Co produced low selectivity to H2 and the highest concentration of CH3CHO and CH 3COCH3. In all the samples with Co the CO was present only in negligible amounts (< 1%). The catalyst with 10wt% Co showed the best selectivity to H2 with 100% of conversion at 500 °C and less than 18% of deactivation after 300 min. A direct relationship between the Co concentration and the total basicity was found. Also a direct relationship between basicity and the conversion was found.
