N2 - Mechanical alloying of elemental Co-Cu powder mixtures, with nominal compositions Co-15, -35, -50, -65 and -85at.%Cu, was carried out by conventional ball-milling. The mechanically alloyed powders have been characterized by XRD, SEM-EMPA and TEM. After long milling times, all the mixtures became supersaturated fcc solid solutions, with lattice parameters which increased with the Cu content. Only the Co-15at.%Cu mixture showed a minor quantity of hcp Co after long milling times. The crystal size revealed by TEM was typically smaller than 30-50 nm. Annealing at 873 K produced grain boundary and matrix precipitation of cobalt in Co-65 and -85at.%Cu.
