Effect of Cu and Cr additions on the ostwald ripening in Fe-Ni-Al alloys

Resumen

This study indicates clearly the precipitation hardening of these alloys by the presence of the β' phase precipitates in the ferrite phase matrix. The morphology of the β' precipitates is rounded cuboids and it changes to elongated plates aligned in the <100> crystallographic direction.The growth kinetics of precipitate coarsening process followed the behavior predicted by the modified Lifshitz-Slyozov-Wagner theories for diffusion-controlled coarsening during the aging of Fe-10wt.%Ni-15wt.%Al, Fe-10wt.%Ni-15wt.%Al-1at.%Cu and Fe-10wt.%Ni-15wt.%Al-1wt.%Cr alloys at 750, 850 and 950 °C for different times. The coarsening kinetics was observed to occur more slowly in both of the aged quaternary alloys. The Cr or Cu element partitioning seems to be the responsible for the increase in coarsening resistance since it may delay the diffusion process. Additionally, the highest aging peak hardness was observed to occur in the Cu-containing alloy and the lowest value corresponded to the Fe-Ni-Al alloy.
