N2 - The compound 4-hydroxy-4-ethyl-4-phenylbutyramide (HEPB) is a cyclic hydroxylamide chemical recently synthesized as part of a series of phenyl alcohol amides with anticonvulsant activity. Experimental studies have shown that HEPB protects rats and mice against several potent convulsive agents. Therefore, studies are underway to determine the probable toxicity of the compound. In this experiment, we used the Tradescantia bioassay to determine whether or not the chemical could increase the level of micronucleated cells in the flower buds. There was a significant increase in micronuclei only with 7 mg/ml, after 24 h of exposure, but not with 1 mg/ml or 5 mg/ml. Higher doses produced cell toxicity. We conclude that HEPB possesses both genotoxic and cytotoxic properties under the experimental conditions used. Thus further genotoxic studies, including a mammal as a model organism, are recommended.
