Resumen

Campylobacterjejuni is one of the causative agents of gastroenteritis in humans, and it is one of the bacteria related mainly with the Guillain-Barre syndrome. It is considered a diners microorganism of poultry and other animals. In Mexico, the search for C. jejuni and other species of the Campylobacter genus is not performed routinely in clinical laboratories; however, it is important to perform this search because, aside from causing gastroenteritis, this bacteria is involved in important autoimmune diseases that affect people of all ages. Knowing the actual situation of C. jejuni in our country will help to understand why it is an apparently forgotten bacterium, since we know its isolation is much higher in developed countries than in underdeveloped ones. For this reason, its routine search should not be abandoned, because it would probably yield relevant results on the presence and isolation of this microorganism in the Mexican population and in those animals meant for human consumption, which are the main source of contamination. Based on the aforementioned, the present review is aimed at covering the current information about this microorganism, placing emphasis on the diagnostic methods used for its identification, the most relevant studies performed in Mexico, and in other countries on the diseases caused by this bacteria, the state of vaccine development against it, as well as the treatment, management, and prevention of campilobacteriosis.
