Abstract

In this work, a three-layered antenna array complemented with Uniplanar Compact Photonic-Bandgap (UP-PBG) structure is presented, for applications in the X-band. The proposed array consists of circular patch radiator operating at 10 GHz, where the element is surrounded by UC-PBG unit cells in order to improve the performance of the antenna. By combining the radiator and the UC-PBG cells, the directivity, gain and polarization are kept, while the parasitic lobes are reduced 50% their magnitude. The bandwidth augments 44% compared to a conventional array, and a diminution of the surface propagation mode is obtained, increasing the radiation efficiency.
