We would like to thank Prof. V.V. Kulikov for drawing our attention to their new experimental results. We thank Dr. W. Schweiger for technical advice in preparing the figures. The work was made possible by the Austrian-Mexican academic exchange program. It was also supported in part by COFFAA-IPN (Mexico). One of the authors (H.G.) would like to thank the Paul Urban Foundation for financial support.

N2 - We have calculated the differential cross section of πd elastic scattering for incident pion momenta between 500 and 2000 MeV/c. Our model takes into account the nucleon-nucleo 1S0, 3S1-3D1 and all the pion-nucleon S- and P-wave channels in a full three-body calculation, and all the pion-nucleon D-, F-, and G-wave channels within an impulse-approximation calculation. We considered the deuteron wave functions of the Paris and Bonn nucleon-nucleon potentials. Our model describes the experimental data rather well at low and high pionic energies, but gives a poor reproduction between momenta of 700 and 1000 MeV/c. In general, the Bonn wave functions yield results in slightly better agreement with the experimental cross sections than those from the Paris potential.
