Abstract
The fetotoxic potential of orally administered α-asarone was evaluated in Wistar pregnant rats given 0-25-50 and 75 mg/kg between day 6 and day 15 of gestation. The fetuses were removed for examination on day 20. A significant maternal toxicity, as indicated by reduced weight gain, was observed among pregnant dams given 50 and 75 mg/kg/day of the test material. Embryotoxic effects appeared also in the two highest treated groups, represented by the numbers of mothers and fetuses affected. However, in the 75 mg/kg treated group, significantly reduced number of fetuses per litter and decreased fetal body weights were observed.
