Abstract

The processes which take place in freshly precipitated insoluble metal nitroprussides, M[Fe(CN)5NO]· xH2O (M = Mn2+, Fe2+, Co2+, Ni2+, Cu2+, Zn2+ and Cd2+), their crystalline phases and their aged products have been studied by X-ray diffraction, Mossbauer, IR and thermogravimetric techniques. The processes entail a loss of zeolitic water. The stable phases are orthorhombic (Pnma) dihydrates (Mn2+, Fe2+, Cu2+, Cd2+ and Zn2+) and face-centred cubic (Fm3̄m) tetrahydrates for Co2+ and Ni2+.
