Research in vernacular architecture in Mexico

Abstract

The CIAV has approached the study of vernacular architecture from various perspectives. In his recent meetings (Al Ain, UAE 2012; Finnskogen, Norway, 2010 and Toroko, Romania 2009) it has been generally observed that, despite the efforts of the Committee, the deterioration and destruction of examples of these buildings has accelerated. One of the issues not addressed yet concerns the methods and processes of research on this heritage. This year the ICOMOS determined that the day of the monument would be dedicated to education. Thus we have a framework for explaining how it relates to education and heritage, through the teaching of architecture and the built vernacular heritage research. We present the case of the College of Engineering and Architecture, National Polytechnic Institute (IPN) in Mexico.
