Abstract

We evaluate the insecticidal activity of an aqueous stem fraction of the Serjania schiedeana Schltdl. (Sapindaceae) (FASs), at 250, 500, 1,000, 1,500, and 2,000 ppm, under laboratory and greenhouse conditions on L1 larvae of Spodoptera frugiperda Smith (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) in corn plants. The laboratory bioassays showed that at 14 days after treatment 250 and 1,500 ppm of the FASs inhibited the larval weight by 50 and 20%. All FASs caused larval mortality greater than 50% and a total larval + pupal mortality of 100%, except at 500 ppm. At Day 7 after treatment, maize plants in a greenhouse treated with 250 and 2,000 ppm of FASs decreased foliar damage by more than 18%. A phytochemical profile of the FASs was positive for alkaloids, flavonoids, and tannins. The results show that FASs can be considered for the development of new botanical insecticides that can compete against toxic synthetic insecticides.
