Abstract

Plankton effects in heavy-metal migration have been examined from the plankton distribution and species composition in the Gulf of Amur, Sea of Japan, near the mouth of the R.Razdol'naya; Zn, Fe, Cu, Mn, Ni and Cd levels in the plankton have been examined in this region and in the gulf in zones affected by human activities. The mean metal contents in the plankton have been standardized for various parts of the gulf in relation to the background values. The elements can be divided into two groups as regards residence times in the plankton: a) Zn, Fe and Cu 6-10 months, and b) Mn, Ni and Cd 2-3 yr. -from Journal summary
