Abstract

This paper discusses the design and MATLAB simulation of a Fuzzy Logic Controller (FLC) for the hydrodesulphurization (HDS) process. HDS is a key process in existing petroleum refining operations. It occurs in a hydrotreating reactor in which sulfur is removed when a catalyst, of small particle size, is contacted with atmospheric gas oil and hydrogen. A fuzzy controller of the hydrogen recycle stream is proposed in this paper. It also provides an overview of the mathematical algorithm to solve the partial differential equations that constitutes the model. Verification of the model was conducted using data from pilot plant experiments. The proposed adaptive FLC controller is shown to be capable of compensating disturbances that affect the systems dynamics and to provide good overall system performance.
