note = "Funding Information: As these fisheries have developed, more data have become available to fishery scientists from across the geographical range of the species and particularly from Mexico and Peru. In 1997 and 1998 the first author visited the Instituto del Mar del Peru (IMARPE), funded by the European Venezuela, Ecuador Colombia and Peru (VECEP) Project, and together with Peruvian fishery scientists led by Carmen Yamashiro, developed a framework for research on D. gigas fishery biology. Included in this framework was a recommendation that international symposia be held to enable data from across the species geographical range to be brought together to obtain an overview of population and fishery biology. The first international symposium on the subject was held in Trujillo, Peru in 1999 and resulted in a special issue of Fisheries Research ( Rodhouse et al., 2001 ). The second international symposium was held in La Paz, Mexico in 2002 and resulted in the collection of papers presented here. A third international symposium was held in Lima, Peru in 2005 and it is anticipated that papers arising will be published in due course. These meetings have emphasised the value of sharing data and information about a commercially exploited species whose range straddles several national Exclusive Economic Zones and extends into the High Seas beyond.
