Abstract
hexane, chloroform and methanol extracts of the leaves of Oedogonium capillare were studied for their antimicrobial activity against 8 organisms (Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Bacillus subtilis, Bacillus cereus, Escherichia coli, Vibrio cholerae, Salmonella typhiy Klebsiella pneumoniae). The hexane extract exhibited some broad spectrum antibacterial activity, was generally more active than the chloroform and methanol extracts and its activity was comparable to that of gentamicin and kanamycin. Minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) of the hexane extract was determined, and found in the range of 250-1000 μg/mL for the organisms tested.
