Personal profile

Research interests

My research expertise and interests focus on applying biotechnological tools for the propagation and study of plants (including medicinal, commercial, and endangered plants) and on the use of bioanalytical techniques and data analysis for the production, extraction, isolation, and identification of bioactive metabolites present in complex biological samples, and to understand the adaptation mechanisms of plants to their environment. During my career, my research experience has been focused (but not limited) on the following main aspects:

  1. The development and implementation of methods for the induction, establishment, characterization, and sterile in vitro culture conditions of traditionally used and endangered plants (i.e., in vitro plants, callus, cell suspension cultures, and genetically transformed roots).
  2. The use of bioanalytical techniques such as Ultra-High-Performance Liquid Chromatography coupled to High-Resolution Mass Spectrometry (UHPLC-PDA- HESI-Orbitrap-MS/MS) for the characterization of secondary metabolites present in complex biological samples, especially in plant-based foods and medicinal plants, and evaluation of their biological activities.
  3. The analysis of alternative plant-based indigenous food systems to assess their contribution of bioactive metabolites to human health, especially in marginalized communities.
  4. The development and application of methods for quantitatively determining target compounds.
