Centro de Desarrollo de Productos Bióticos (CEPROBI)

Organization profile

Organization profile

The creation of our Center dates from the decade of the forties in the facilities of the National School of Biological Sciences, specifically in the laboratory of Development of Natural Products and with the study of Mexican plants by doctors Manuel Castañeda and Luz María del Castillo. Later, this laboratory was located as a dependency of the Commission of Operation and Promotion of Academic Activities, already with the current name. Thus, in 1984, through the corresponding agreement of the General Consultative Council, it was recognized as a research center.

After 34 years of such agreement, it has grown enormously in terms of population (researchers, support staff and students); at the beginning there was a population close to 50 people, at present we live in the center, around 350 people; the facilities occupied less than 500 m2 and today we have 5713 m2 of construction.

CeProBi is organized in four research departments: Biotechnology, Plant-Insect Interactions, Technological Development, and Nutrition and Functional Foods, which carry out research and high level teaching in the field of biotic product development in Mexico. This activity is carried out from three lines of research: plant biotechnology, plant protection, and the study and use of biomolecules. It also has two support and administration departments and three units: Unidad Politécnica de Integración Social (UPIS), Unidad de Informática (UI) and Unidad de Tecnología Educativa y Campus Virtual (UTECV).
